How do I care for my cloth products?
Washing and caring for your cloth products
is quite easy. Below you will find some basic guidelines
on washing instructions of our menstrual pads, cloth wipes, and
breast pads. Feel free to alter your method any way
necessary, there isn't really a set guideline to how you should
care for your cloth items. The only rule I will recommend
that you adhere to is that
you should never use regular fabric
softener with your cloth products.
It causes the absorption to decrease and your cloth pads, wipes,
and breast pads will not be able to withstand moisture like they
originally should. If you feel that you need to soften your
pads, add a few drops of tea tree oil or some
simple vinegar to your rinse cycle and it should help soften
your cloth.
Washing Cloth Menstrual Pads
Whenever you change your pad during your cycle, the best
way to avoid staining is to rinse out your pad thoroughly in cold
water. It's best to use cold because hot water tends to set
the stain in during an initial rinse. Once your pad is rinsed
out, you can then place the pad in a pot/plastic
container/bucket/etc. filled with water to soak until you are ready
to wash all of your pads at the end of your cycle. You can
have a little detergent or natural softener (tea tree oil, vinegar,
etc.) in the water as well if you like, it's really a personal
choice. Some women also pour a little peroxide onto the stain
to help lift it out. But a general rinsing should do the trick
as far as most stains go. If you are out and need to change
your pad, you can either rinse it like you would at home and then store it
until you launder it like usual. You can also carry a small bottle of
stain solution and give the pad a few spritzes to help fight stains until
you can wash your pads properly.
Once your period is over, simply dump all of the pads into the
washing machine and run it on the warm or warm/hot cycle. If
you are washing the pads by themselves instead of with all of your other
laundry, you may want to cut back on the normal amount of detergent that
would be recommended since the detergent can be hard to rinse out of the
pads. Again, never use fabric softener because it corrupts the
absorbency of the pad, and this is obviously a bad idea. If you feel
that your pads are starting to get rough after a while or you just generally
have hard water, you can use more natural methods of softening the fabric.
Simple white vinegar that you can find in any grocery store is perfect for
this. You don't need a large amount either. You can also use a
few drops of tea tree oil if you prefer. It's a matter of preference.
Some women just wash and go, and that is fine as well.
